TRAFFIC came to a standstill in Honiara for hours yesterday after a 10-tonne truck struck a powerline near the central market and pulled down the electricity post.

The truck was said to be owned by Gold Ridge Mining Limited (GRML).

Eyewitness, John Toki told Solomon Star the truck was carrying a machine which caught the power line.

“It was heading up to East Honiara when the incident happened,” he said.

“Truck with such kind load should not speed on the high way because the polls are not very high.

“Responsibly authorities need to do something about this,” Toki said.

Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) permanent secretary, Moses Virivolomo said he can’t comment because no formal report on the incident has reached him yesterday.

However, he said truck with high loads and heavy weight are not allowed to travel on the road.

“Trucks with high loads and heavy weight will need to get permission first from us before can travel on the road,” he said.

Solomon Islands Electricity Authority (SIEA) managed to respond quickly on the incident and rectified the problem.
