Malaita enjoys shipping competition

THE capital is again experiencing an influx of people as the holiday season lapsed.

During last week and over the weekend, over five ships made shiploads of passengers from Auki, Malaita.

Some of the ships made more than one trip in a day.

These ships concentrated on Malaita because of distance and market.

One crew member on one of the ships serving the Auki route Jerry Kuruasi said it is the only time of the year when they get good loads.

“We like the route because we can make up to two trips in a day and we can still get the maximum capacity loading,” Mr Kuruasi said.

He said prior to the Christmas and after the New Year were best and very busy times.

He however said passengers are becoming selective because of the high competition over the route.

“But that’s good for passengers because they can also go for ships with cheaper fares.”

People who spent holidays in other provinces are also returning.

This means the city will experience a population boom before the end of this month as was before Christmas.

However, that will not last as students will return to their respective schools from Honiara.
