TWO men accused of producing and drinking homebrew were each jailed for two months after they pleaded guilty to the offences in the Gizo Magistrates Court yesterday.
Silas Lamukera and Samson Ivokana of Lambulambu Village Vella la Vella, Western Province were charge under Section 4 (1) (2) of the Western Province Public Nuisance Ordinance 1991.
Police said that on 21st December 2009 both accused produced and drank the homebrew at their village.
They then continued on drinking while they were on their way to Gizo in an Out Board Motor canoe.
On the way at Mare Point an argument broke out between them and two bottles of the homebrew were taken from the canoe and handed to the Police in Gizo.
Police later arrested them.
Chief Magistrate Leonard Maina when passing sentence said it is common knowledge that homebrew or kwaso caused a lot of problem to the communities every where in the country.
“Every one of us within our powers or responsibilities must take steps to address this issue of homebrew or kwaso,” Mr Maina said.
“In all respect Western Province has now taken the lead in this issue in creating as an offence the consumption of illeagaly made liquor or homebrew/kwaso.
“I do hope that other provinces may soon follow to legislate within their power the laws which may assist to create harmony and peace in the communities,” Mr Maina said.
He said for this case he takes into account the accused early guilty pleas and being first time offenders.
But he said he is concerned with the problems related or caused by those who take homebrew or kwaso and it is increasing in this part of the country.
The two men will serve their jail terms at Gizo Prison.
