MALAITA Province Premier, Richard Irosaea says his government is working with landowners to dump the heaps of rubbish lying on the Auki Township.
This comes after Patrick Kili of North Malaita accused the provincial government of not doing anything to remove the rubbish since late last year.
The rubbish has caused an eyesore to visitors who went to spend Christmas in Malaita.
Mr Irosaea said the province could not dump the rubbish since last November because the dumpsite is on a customary land.
The landowners stopped the province from dumping the rubbish on their land due to environmental risks.
“The landowners only allow the dumping site if the rubbish are dump and covered,” Mr Irosaea said.
“However, we do not have machines to do that.”
But Mr Irosaea said his government is working with the landowners to sort out this problem.
Auki is the gateway to Malaita province.
It is once described as the cleanest township in the country.
