A QUARREL over a few beers between two groups turned nasty when a man was stabbed on the head with a screw driver and later died yesterday morning.
On Tuesday night at about 11:30pm two men from Makira Province who were walking back from Town Council after buying beer were followed by a group of youths.
When they came to the junction between Kaibia and Mbokonavera School the two men met three of their wantoks so they stood there telling stories.
While chatting there, the group following them confronted them and asked them if they could have some of their beers.
The deceased replied telling the group they beer were not enough and they should go and look for their own.
One of those amongst the boys from Makira told the Solomon Star the deceased was yet to finish talking when they boys attacked him.
“There were about six of them and we were caught off guard. I was the first one to be punched. I lost my footing and fell into the culvert nearby,” he said.
He said when he fell off, he realised he wasn’t hurt so he got up and ran down the drain.
“That’s where my story ends and I don’t know what happened to my other friends,” he said.
However, market vendors who witnessed the incident told the Solomon Star that the youths after attacking the fmen took off with their beers walking up towards Mbokonavera School.
After the fight they said they heard someone gasping for breath.
“When we came up to where the incident happened we saw that one of the boys was lying on the road and the other was floating in the drain where he was stabbed and thrown in,” one of the eyewitnesses said.
“We pulled him up but he was not breathing so we washed him with water and turned him to his side.
“Eventually he came through but the right side of his head was bleeding heavily and when we washed it we saw a deep wound as he was stabbed with a sharp object,” the eyewitness said.
They said after they helped him, the deceased was walking and talking normally.
However, they said they were shocked when they heard that after he was taken to the hospital to be treated he was taken back home and died about 4am.
When the Solomon Star visited the scene yesterday, police were also there getting information from witnesses and examining the site.
The police media unit also confirmed the reports and said investigations are underway.
