PEOPLE of Tuvi village in west Guadalcanal got a surprise of their lives when a villager caught a sleeping shark last weekend.

Jeffery Gau a villager went out fishing when he caught the shark.

It took him an hour to pull up the shark into his boat.

The shark is measured at 14 feet in lenght and 3 feet wide.

After being retrieved from the sea, the shark was slaughtered by a group of men.

The flesh was then shared amongst the families to eat.

It was like an extra feast for the villagers after the catch that weekend.

Some of the villagers had to BBQ the shark flesh to eat.

Although most of them never tasted shark flesh they managed to taste it for the first time.

Mr Gau said it was the first time for any villager to catch such a huge shark.

"I used to fish small fish but not this one because this is the first time for me to catch a shark," he said.

He said he would keep the fins to sell later.
