FORMER students of Betikama Adventist College (BAC) between 1993-1998 have pledged to look at ways to help support the school's campus and dormitories.

The former students met on Sunday during a picnic get together at the Central Bank's beach premises at Aruligo, west Guadalcanal.

The group's President Donald Saepio said most of the former students are now working and it’s time to repay the help Betikama had offered them during their time as students.

"Though it may be small, but such a help can be very significant for the school," he said.

During their brief meeting the students said support should be given to the school campus or the dormitories.

A former student now a medical officer at the National Referral Hospital's Surgical ward, Doke Roba said something must be done to help the school.

He also expressed concern with the changes happening at the school especially with the ablution block.

Mr Roba said having visited the school a number of times, one thing which he noticed are the buildings being old.

He added the ablution block is perhaps the most urgent issue to address because it touches on the health of the students.

He said the toilets and shower facilities are old and not fit for students to be used.

Mr Roba said having such filthy environment will affect the students' personal hygiene and learning capability.

He said recently Betikama was in the limelight over reports of hookworm bacteria being found present in some of the students' stomach.

"Therefore help should be given to the students to live in a healthy environment," he said.

The former students agreed to work together this year to help raise funds to support the school in the two areas in the coming years.

"It would be an ongoing effort by the former students," Mr Saepio said.

A committee had been set up to look at ways to secure funds to help with the project.

The school kicked off its academic year more than a week ago and parents and guardians were invited to the school to help clean up the campus.
