THE University of the South Pacific (USP) Center in Solomon Islands has announced that it will increase the number of student intake for this year.
Last year the campus had around 3,000 plus students with over seven hundred studying full-time.
For this year the campus wants to increase the number of students studying on campus to cater for the growth and expansions the university is currently embarking on here.
USP Campus Director John Usuramo said one of the major developments for 2010 is the aim of increasing the number of students by about five percent.
He said this should cater for the new developments the campus has embarked upon especially in providing higher course levels for students studying major programs and including other new developments.
“I am pleased to say that this year the USP campus is embarking on several major improvement and expansion programs,” Mr Usuramo revealed.
“200 level courses will now be taught in selected major programs and more lecturers will be brought in to teach students this year.”
He said since last year the campus introduced face to face teaching in selected major programs and this year, USP will add higher level courses for its students supported by full time lecturers.
Mr Usuramo said about 13 new lecturers will lecture full time to students on campus.
Meanwhile, one of USP’s major new programs will begin this morning.
The program is called “Success at USP”- an orientation program for all new students on campus here in Honiara.
Mr Usuramo explained that the program is essential in helping new students adjust to tertiary level of education.
He said the program is targeting the Distant and Flexible Learning (DFL) students, especially those enrolling for the first time to the institution.
He said unlike the usual orientation programs, this one is an activity- filled program that will be conducted over a four day period for students.
“The Success at USP program basically to train students to deal with the expectations of the university,” he explained.
“We invite all new students to take part in the program.”
