A local citizen is urging the Government and responsible authorities to review the liquor law as soon as possible.
John Kibo of East Central Guadalcanal said authorities need to look at ways selling of beer can be controlled.
“Consuming of alcohol among youths is rising at an alarming rate in Honiara and in the Provincial headquarters because of what we normally call black markets,” Mr Kibo said.
He said almost all the deaths during the past weekends were alcohol related.
“Interestingly, the one that happened at Mbkonavera involved people who were out to buy beer at night.
“That to me is very clear that black markets are operating everywhere so unless, the law is altered, police will spend a lot of money in their continuous operations to crack down on black markets and Kwaso production.”
He said alcohol is accessible everywhere to anyone nowadays.
“Even people under the legal age can go and buy alcohol without questions because sellers are only interested in money and not the welfare of anyone, the country or the laws,” Mr Kibo said.
“I believe that if the liquor licensing law is amended, police will have no problem finding any black markets outlets in Honiara,” he said.
He said authorities should review the liquor act in a way that will help police to easily carry out their job.
“They need to regulate and actively implement the legal drinking age and enforce strict rules on sellers and buyers.”
Mr Kibo said if nothing is done, the country will continue to face more and more problems which will then create an environment where people will live in fear.
