Levo inquiry ruling on March 12

RULING on the outcome of a short form preliminary inquiry held into the case of Honiara lawyer Charles Levo yesterday will be made on March 12.

The inquiry was held into the 22 counts of conversion and one count of money laundering charges laid against Levo last year.

These were relation to the alleged missappropriation of more than $1 million of client’s money he held in trust.

If the court finds enough evidence, Levo will be committed to the High Court for trial.

The other charges of common assault and five counts of conversion dating back in 2005 will be tried in the Magistrate’s Court at the end of this month.

Maelyn Bird from the Crystal Lawyers is representing the accused.

Meanwhile, another Honiara lawyer Charles Ashley, who faces similar fraud charges, also appeared in court yesterday for mention.

Ashley is facing 29 counts of conversion and one count of money laundering.

These were in relation to more the $1 million of client money he allegedly misused.

Principal Magistrate Steve Wilson adjourned the matter for mention to April 6.

A long form preliminary inquiry into the case was set for July 5,6, and 8,9.

Bail for the accused was extended.

Billy Titiulu of the Pacific Lawyers is representing Ashley.
