PAPUA New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has reaffirmed his government’s support in helping the Solomon Islands in the education sector.

Sir Michael said his government is committed and would always assist Solomon Islands students studying in various universities in PNG.

Sir Michael made the assurance when appearing as the guest of honour at Divine Word University’s 28th graduation ceremony over the weekend.

Solomon Star’s senior journalist Douglas Marau was the only Solomon Islander to graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Communication Arts (Journalism).

More than 700 Papua New Guineans graduated from the university.

Sir Michael said with more students coming into PNG attending its universities, his country is willing to extend its assistance in providing education and training for its neighbouring Pacific Islands countries.

With already 15 Solomon Islands students on campus, the Divine Word University is expecting more international students from other Pacific countries taking up post graduate programs.

Solomon Islands High Commissioner to PNG, Bernard Bata’anisia commended PNG for its assurance, saying that such remarks by the Prime Minister only shows that the bilateral ties between the two countries continue to be strengthened.

“I am indeed happy with the assurance by Sir Michael that PNG is willing to extend its assistance to Solomon Islands with regards to the development of our human resources,” Mr Bata’anisia said.

“A lot of our students have benefited from this over the years,” he added.

He said Solomon Islands will continue to work closely with the PNG Government and its various universities in ensuring that more students come to study in PNG.
