THE Solomon Islands Honey Association will soon establish a special storage facility with up-to-date Stainless Steel Honey Tank.
This will enable the association to export its products.
Funding of $601,000 for the new facility will come from the Japanese Government under its Grassroots and Human Security scheme.
A grant contract for the project was signed yesterday.
Japanese Charge d’Affaires Akira Iwanade said the project will result in the upgrade of rural beekeeping farms that are members of the association.
Mr Iwanade said the project is focusing on providing investment tools like beekeeping boxes and honey strainers for the farmers in Isabel, Makira/Ulawa, and Temotu provinces.
“I understand that Solomon Islands needs indigenous enterprise, indigenous companies, indigenous shops managed by Solomon Islanders in order to make themselves wealthy.”
Mr Iwanade said he hoped the association and its members used the funding to boost their production.
Manager of the Solomon Islands Association Dove Winston Sale said the funding will help them develop the current state of the industry.
“This assistance is a milestone in this industry, the biggest for a single donor to the association to help 60 farmers with a total of 600 hives shared equally amongst the three provinces.”
He said the money will upgrade the quality control issue by establishing a special storage facility with up to date Stainless Steel Honey Tank which will help market their products overseas.
