A HUSBAND accused by his wife of beating her up denied the claim yesterday.
Rosemary Nunua’s battered and twisted face was splashed on the Solomon Star’s front page on Tuesday after she claimed her husband beat her up.
But husband David Iro called in the Solomon Star office yesterday to refute the claim, saying he never beat up his wife.
“The truth is I arrived back home on Saturday night at about 11pm only to find my young son alone at home,” Mr Iro, who drives his own taxi, claimed.
“My other children were staying at their uncle’s place next to our Kaibia home.
“I asked my son where his mother is and he told me the woman has not returned since she left the house in the morning.
“I left the food I brought home with my son and went out to look for my wife.
“I could not find my wife in any of the nightclubs so I went up to the City Motel and saw my wife drinking with some men,” he said.
Mr Iro said he told his wife to go into their car but she insisted he pays for some beers before she could come.
“So I paid her beer, sat and drink with her until my uncle Allen showed up at the motel.
“Then I told her we go and check the car because my day’s takings were all in there.
“Unfortunately, when we reached the car, the $250 I earned was already stolen.
‘We went into the car and drove off. My uncle sat at the back, while my wife, who by then was too drunk sat in the front passenger seat.”
He said they drove off as far as the Honiara City Council round-about but then decided to return to City Motel.
Mr Iro said he parked the car outside and went to the reception.
“At that time it was raining heavily.
“I got out leaving the two sleeping in the car and went to the reception area where I bought some more beers.
“I was drinking and talking with others when I noticed something moved in the car and the car was rocking.”
“I ran to the car and opened the door on the left side in time to see a man on top of my wife who was now naked.
“My wife was too drunk and was lying there without knowing anything.
“I tried to hold the man to hit him but he jumped to the back seat and ran out.”
Mr Iro claimed people drinking at the motel at that time witnessed the incident.
He claimed the man raped his wife.
“I looked at my wife and saw blood and bruises on her face. The man who raped my wife must have beaten her up.”
He claimed another wantok who ran over to see what happened followed him to look for the man who he alleged had raped his wife.
“We managed to find the brother of the man and told him what had happened.
“He gave $100 to quieten things down,” he said.
Mr Iro claimed they then drove off to Ranadi where his wife now put on her clothes but didn’t know what had happened.
He claimed they later returned to City Motel but could not find the man he claimed raped his wife.
He said later two of his wantoks came and they insisted to go and ask compensation from the alleged rapist’s brother.
“They paid $300 and one shell money,” he claimed.
He claimed on Sunday morning when they arrived home, he and his wife had no rows, arguments or a fight.
“On Monday, I dropped off my wife at work as she insisted she needs to report to work and get a sick leave.
“When I returned in the afternoon to pick her up I was told by security guards that my wife’s boss took her to the media and the police station.”
He said he was shocked to see his wife’s photo and story in the paper the following day.
Mr Iro added he didn’t report the alleged rape of his wife to police.
