IT’S a pity those who successfully petitioned Sir Allan Kemakeza’s legality to contest the recent by-election won only for Sir Peter Kenilorea to say Sir Allan is now free to contest the upcoming general election.
A Lavukal man James Pisu said it is a slap on the face of the petitioners.
“We want to know, now that Sir Allan legally should not take part in the by-election, but served time as an MP what punishment is there,” Mr Pisu said.
He said it is a shame for the electoral commission and the returning officer responsible for giving orders for Sir Allan to continue as a candidate.
“Will the returning officer be disciplined for making the illegal decision?” he asked.
Mr Pisu said that is corruption in its fine form.
“Sir Peter and the electoral commission refuse to hold a by-election because they said common sense will tell that there is no need because the National General Election is looming.
“It was also common sense that a convict should not contest any by-elections.
“Why then did they silently swallow it when they know exactly that Sir Allan should not contest.
“Sir Peter amidst accusation after Sir Allan’s victory said ‘majority rules’, even though he knew that it was not right according to law.”
He said it was very interesting to see Sir Peter quickly pointing his finger at the returning officer on legal grounds.
“Review the electoral laws immediately to avoid such a shame happening again, but we insist that the returning officer face consequences,” Mr Pisu said.
