NINE Japanese volunteers are here visiting battlefields their ancestor fought on during World War Two.
They were from Mnobusan Gyogakuruo dorm, one of the universities of the Japanese Buddist Monks.
Translator of the group Eiji Han Shimizu said the students wanted to pay respect to their fallen comrades while at the same time cleared the ground of dangerous war wrecks.
Mr Shimizu said since they arrived last week they have been up on the battlefields on Guadalcanal beyond Tuvaruhu looking for remains of their ancestors and collecting old ammunitions.
“We are ashamed that our Government failed to do enough to clear the mess they left behind which a lot of innocent people are suffering from now,” he said.
Mr Shimizu said their being here now is the little help they can give the country.
“We are trying to help in any way we can by getting rid of the bombs,” he said.
He said in the last three days they have been to the battlefields behind the Tuvaruhu hills and have found many bombs and remaining bones.
They will conduct a memorial service at Leilei village at Tuvaruhu during which they’ve hand over their finds to the Bomb Disposal Unit.
