A POLICE Officer who was accused of receiving his salary while he was absent from work was was jailed for one month yesterday.
Constable Albert Neuwa was charged with one count of desertion in relation to the offence committed between September 15 and November 23 in 2008.
Police said Neuwa, who was a serving Police Officer of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, works at the Kukum traffic Centre.
He was issued with an internal transfer by the Operational Support Manger Inspector Gravis Rikimae of Central Police station to have him transferred from Kukum station to Central police station.
Neuwa was alleged to have been briefed and warned by a senior staff in relation to the transfer that he has to report to Central Police Station by September 15.
However, on that day when he was supposed to begin his duties he never turned up for work and continues to receive full salary.
After an investigation was carried he was found to have not applied for any special leave as first suspected by senior staff.
His salary was then ceased the following year (January 19, 2009).
Neuwa when appeared in court previously denied the allegations but then changed his plea.
Due to his non co-operation in attending court hearings he was remanded in custody on Thursday for his sentence yesterday.
Principal Magistrate Steve Wilson sentenced him to one month imprisonment back dating to March 11 when he was placed in custody.
George Gray from the Public Solicitor’s Office represented the accused.
