SOME of our local students studying in various institutions in Papua New Guinea have reportedly lost their bags after they were offloaded in Port Moresby.
Frustrated students at the University of Technology (UNITECH), University of Goroka and Kavieng Fisheries College in New Ireland Province have written to the Solomon Islands High Commissioner Bernard Bata’anisia to voice their frustration.
“It has come to our attention that some of our luggage’s have not arrived since we came from Honiara three weeks ago and some of us are without clothes and borrowing from friends,” one of the students said in a letter to Mr Bata’anisia which the Solomon Star cited.
The students said they travelled to their various schools through Port Moresby but later learnt when they arrived at their destination that their luggage were offloaded.
The students also asked the High Commissioner if the government would be assisting students who have lost their baggage in relation to such circumstances.
Mr Bata’anisia said he would be talking to Air Niugini in Port Moresby to follow up on the lost luggage.
Meanwhile, as the academic year kicked off students have settled into their different universities with the new ones recently arrived from a chartered government flight last week.
More than 300 local students are studying in different institutions in PNG this year.
“The students have settled in and most of them have received their allowances already,” Mr Bata’anisia said.
He also made mention that this year the number of students studying in PNG have increased dramatically compared to past years.
