SEVENRAL suspects are being questioned by Munda Police after a Chinese trade store was broken into Monday night this week.
Items such as cash, clothing, and audio equipments worth thousands of dollars were
stolen.
The burglars were believed to have used tools to gain access into the shop, which is also selling alcohol.
The suspects were arrested early Tuesday morning following a quick tip off and police acted swiftly to make the arrests before the suspects flee to Noro and Gizo.
Residents in Munda are meanwhile, concern about the rising trend of raids and break-ins to properties with little or no police intervention.
Some of the suspects held are known to police.
“My concern is to have the suspects charged and sent to court,” said the shop owner.
‘’A total of eight reported incidents were recorded for 2009. All of them have been reported to police.
“I am amongst the victims who reported a case following a break in, but there were no further action after the matter was brought to police,” the shop owner said.
Another Munda resident, who asked not to be named, questions whether the suspects will ever be taken to court at all.
“Munda police station is not a repeater -station but it has to be seen as a place where issues like
simple break-ins need to be properly addressed,” he said.
The four young suspects were previously arrested for similar incidents.
But they escaped prosecution because of their young age.
On one previous occasion after a court in Gizo granted released them because of their age, they raided Chacha Store and got away with food and other items.
Later, they told police they did that because they were hungry whilst waiting for transport back to Munda.
Amongst the reported break-in cases reaching Munda police are:
• Tthe removal of a computer set and some cargoes from the local airline office,
• Break-in at the SP bank branch in Noro, where a small amount of cash were stolen,
• Break in at a local trade store at Dunde village and some $40,000 were removed,
• Break in at a hospital canteen at the Helena Goldie Hospital,
• Removal of computer software including important working tools of the Roviana
Conservation Office.
A fortnight ago a structure which accommodates several shops, including the popular Munda Hot Bread Kitchen, was ransacked and thieves got away with items worth thousands of dollars.
The building is located right next to the Munda Police station.
A number of suspects are being questioned over those cases
