Report on new seats is before parliament

PARLIAMENT is expected to debate the Constitutional Boundaries Commission 2009 report next Tuesday.

Notice of the report was submitted to parliament yesterday.

According to standing orders, it takes three days after the notice is issued before Parliament can debate the report.

The report recommends the creation of 17 new constituencies.

Under the constitution, Parliament can only consider or reject the report but cannot vary it.

Recently it was reported Government was split on the recommendations.

Top Cabinet sources told the Solomon Star earlier most members and ministers do not want to support the report because of the economic implications it will bring on the nation.

But the sources said certain MPs want to see the report passed to help them retain their seats in the coming elections.
