MEMBERS of the Emerging Pacific Leaders Dialogue (EPLD) 2010 Tour group learnt of the challenges faced in the provision of banking services to the people of Solomon Islands, during their meeting with CBSI and commercial banks representatives on Wednesday night.

The EPLD Solomon Study Tour Group leader Dr Gunzee Gawin highlighted that financial illiteracy is still a major challenge to development.

Dr Gawin of Papua New Guinea noted that banks operating in the country faced similar challenges and difficulties in terms of carrying out their services throughout the Solomon’s.

“I’ve noted that in our discussions so far, we’ve highlighted the issue of financial illiteracy as a major issue of concern due to geographical, political and economical  factors”, Dr Gawin said.

“This has a bearing on the level of development people tend to have in their rural communities”.

Dr. Gawin said that the information obtained during the meeting will be put together in a report that will be presented on Monday in Tonga where all the EPLD Tour Groups will meet.

Country Head of Bank of South Pacific, Mark Corcoran, Cameron Waterson, Manger of Business at Westpac Bank and Caroline Kanoko, Manager of the International Department at CBSI made the presentations to the study group.

The program is the second for EPLD following the inaugural EPLD in 2006 and it is an important regional leadership development initiative that is funded and sponsored by government agencies and the private sector across the Pacific.
