TWO families watched helplessly as an excavator rushed in with the support of police and council law enforcers and tore down their fence and everything that stands on the way.
The Fera family and John Lou staying at Guso Point, opposite the Bahai centre, expressed disapproval with the action when Solomon Star visited the area.
The excavator with the support of police and the city law enforcers swiftly moved in on Monday to demolish the family’s property following an order from the city council.
Spokesperson for the family George Tafisi Fera said they moved in, entered into the property and rammed down the fence with the excavator as police and law enforcer look on.
“There are other fences erected around properties here but they did nothing with them,” Mr Tafisi said.
He said the fence was erected in January this year.
He said the land was bought from the Guso family in 1990.
He said they will take legal action over the damage of their properties by the city council.
City council clerk Wayne Hart said occupants of the area erected the fence illegally.
“They have no building permission and they also cut trees. They did not do planning through our country planning board,” Mr Hart said.
He said we have given them enough warning but they refuse to listen.
“They even threatened our staff and swore at them and recently we put up a stop work notice but they failed to adhere as well.
“We asked them to take the fence down but they failed to do that.”
Mr Hart said the piece of land belong to somebody else and not the family.
It is believed Dennis Kwan holds the title as a letter written to the city clerk last week obtained by Solomon Star showed Mr Kwan asking the council to be lenient on the matter.
“Please allow both the fence and the leaf house to remain where they are to allow me to consider what action to take to get this resolved appropriately once and for all,” Mr Kwan stated in the letter.
He stated that the issue need to be considered on financial implications and repercussions on the part of the families there (Rex Fera and John Lou) and himself.
“I ‘am grateful for your understanding in dealing with this matter as any action taken may have further implications on my part,” he stated.
It is not clear whether he had given the order to the council for the forceful removal of the fence and leaf hut.
Wayne Hart said the fence was illegal.
