YOUNG people are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, director of Scripture Union Solomon Islands, Solomon Maui Taugenga, says.
He was speaking at the opening of a HIV/AIDS training for students at the Scripture Union conference room in Honiara, this week.
Mr Taugenga said HIV/AIDS is a world problem and young people are at great risk.
He said it’s therefore important for young people to share information with each other on how to prevent contracting the killer disease.
“HIV/AIDS trainings are therefore significant for youths beause young people are the future generation and leaders of this nation,” Mr Taugenga said.
“Solomon Island is a small country with 12 confirmed recorded HIV cases so far. Therefore, it’s important young people get the right information on the disease.
“Big countries have money to battle against HIV/AIDS and Solomon Island must look at every opportunity to fight the disease.”
Mr Taugenga said Scripture Unions all over the world have join in the effort to share information about the risks HIV/AIDS pose to young people.
He said world wide, students in Africa have the highest number of HIV cases.
Students and reps from 12 schools in Honiara are participating in the training.
About 12 schools in Honiara each with their represenatives participate in the HIV trainings conducted by SU Solomon Islands.
The training covers HIV prevention measures, teenager, peer pressure, decission making, vulrnability, what is love, relationship and time management.
Scripture Union HIV/AIDS trainer Edward Sade said the training aims to equip young people with the right about the disease.
The training will conclude next week.
