IN April 2010 fifteen Solomon Islanders participated in a workshop learning a simple technique for spawning giant clams.

This workshop was conducted at Nusa Tupe, Gizo by the WorldFish Center.  Participants included staff from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, the WorldFish Center and members from the Nusa Aquarium Farmers Association.

The objective of this workshop was to provide training about culturing giant clams for the aquarium trade and for reef re-stocking purposes.

The workshop was part of a NZAID funded project undertaken by the WorldFish Center in partnership with WWF-SI.

Cletus Pita Oengpepa, manager of the WorldFish, Nusa Tupe Research Station said that “the workshop was a great success and will provide an opportunity for rural communities to further develop small-scale business opportunities that are sustainable and do not harm the environment”.
