POLICE are determined to wipe out illegal alcohol businesses commonly known as “Black Markets”.
A four-word stern warning echoed by Deputy Police commissioner Walter Kola to black market operators are “police will never stop”.
“Because it is very common that most of these black market outlets when we raid them and bring them to face justice, they will still open the next day.
“But to tell them the truth, police will never give up and will continue to raid black market outlets that we know,” Mr Kola said.
He said black marketing of alcohol is a serous offence and an issue that police will seriously focus on.
“I must make it clear depending on how you want to do business; police will not tolerate those black marketing alcohol therefore will ensure that is discouraged.”
Mr Kola said raiding of a black market outlet in the Bahai area is a good example that these people risk loosing thousands of dollars.
“They can loose thousands of dollars if we got them, because we confiscated about 100 cartons of beer which would worth almost $20,000 during the Kukum raid.
“Therefore if you want your money secure and safe do safe and legal businesses.
He said such black marketing is one foundation of the ongoing social problems amongst youths in Honiara during weekends and at nights.
The deputy police commissioner said in terms of punishment given the magnitude of the offence, he said police are powerless but the courts always ensure these people receive maximum punishment.
“But another trick is to ensure these people are brought before the courts often so that they can receive severe punishment for reoffending, coupled with the loose of money through confiscating of properties.”
He said the punishment issue is a concern but will continue to carry out their designated duties.
He appealed to the public to assist police with information on whoever is selling liquor illegally.
“Your identity will never be revealed if you like,” Mr Kola said.
