A SMALL community in north Malaita recently light up their homes, thanks to the New Zealand High Commission in Honiara.

That was after Emmaus community received solar power from the High Commission’s head of mission fund.

Project coordinator Henry Kiko said recently the High Commission approved their solar project application worth $20,111.

“It’s a dream come true,” Mr Kiko said on arrival home with the solar panels.

Emmaus community is located in the Malu’u area.

The solar power assistance includes five sets of 20 watts solar panels, solar controller boards, batteries, cables and lights.

Mr Kiko said members of his community were overwhelmed by New Zealand’s generosity.

“To have proper and sustainable means of lighting in the home is every rural Solomon Islander’s dream.

“We’ve had our dreams come true when New Zealand agreed to fund our project”, Mr Kiko said.

Another villager Fredrick Fo’atalaa also expressed his warm thanks for the assistance.

Village committee secretary Ms Vivian appealed to community members to make full use of the gift and keep them safely.

She said with the new solar panels, their daily expenses on kerosene are now a thing of the past.

The community also thanked those who assisted in supporting their application.
