THE Electoral Commission met on Monday and decided on a date for the upcoming National General Election.

However, Chief Electoral Officer, Polycarp Haununu said under protocol the Governor General Sir Frank Kabui will proclaim the date to the nation.

He said the Electoral Commission will give the recommendation to the Government House this week, awaiting the return of Sir Frank from Taiwan on May 19.

Veteran Journalist, Alfred Sasako reported recently that there are four dates being closely looked at, three in July and one in early August.

In July, the dates are 12, 17 and 29. August 5 is the other date.

He said quoted insiders as saying July 29 seems to be the most favoured, given that much work is yet to be completed with the voter registration.

However, Mr Haununu said the dates mentioned by Mr Sasako are ally wrong.

He said the Commission came up with different dates and the one recommended is not July 29 as well.

Chairman of the Commission, Sir Peter Kenilorea told the media the elections should be held either late July or early August and the Commission is yet to release the date.

Sir Peter said the Commission's recommended date will be given to Cabinet after the meeting.

By law, a general election has to be held within four months of parliament dissolution.

The eighth parliament dissolved on April 24.

An estimated 400,000 registered voters are expected to go to the poll to elect their new 50 Members of Parliament in the coming months.
