OUR Party has pledged to commit $250-million in the tourism sector to transform it into a profitable industry and says the Central Islands Province has huge potential to be an active participant.

OUR Party President, Manasseh Sogavare made the pledge at the launch of the political party in the Central Islands Provincial capital, Tulagi, Sunday.

Mr Sogavare told the crowd that turned out at the ceremony that the government’s inability to develop the tourism sector ever since independence was an insult to the integrity of a country blessed with natural beauty and unique opportunities that are fully capable of supporting a sustainable tourism sector.

“OUR party is committed to turn the table upside down in this sector should it take over the government come the national general elections in August,” he said.

“In line with our marketing approach to investment, OUR Party will commit $250 million in this sector to a viable tourism industry that will become the envy of other Pacific island states.

“If Fiji and Vanuatu can do it, we do not see any reason why we cannot do it better in Solomon Islands.

“Central Islands Province has huge potentials to participate in a big way in this sector.”

The former Opposition leader and East Choiseul MP said OUR Party will be adopting a radical marketing approach to attracting quality investors and this process will involve major legislative and administrative reforms.

Mr Sogavare said since independence the country’s investment strategy was bogged down in entertaining low quality investment and this was largely due to its low quality human resource and proximity to international market.

“All the investors that we were able to attract were those that continued to rape our resources and sell them raw to their countries.”
