New party supports plan to turn SICHE into uni

A NEWLY launched political party, Direct Development Party, says it supports the idea of turning Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE) into a National University.

Interim Party leader, Dick Ha'amori, told the Solomon Star in an interview last night of his party’s plan after the Government opts to turn SICHE into a TAFE type College instead.

He said under the Coalition of National Unity Rural Advancement (CNURA) party's priorities in education are:

1. Free education.

2. Establish University in Solomon Islands.

3. Introduce another steam of secondary levels in the TVETS.

4. Prepare design of SICHE for turning into a university.

However, the former director of SICHE said the current Minister of Education and Human Resources Matthew Wale came in and wants to convert SICHE into a TAFE College.

He said this was not right because the government’s policy does not mention it.

Mr Ha'amori was recently sacked by SICHE Council after they lost confidence in him.

However, he said there is a mismatch of training man power at SICHE.

“Currently, we are training students for luxury and not tools for the nation,” he said.

“We should train more engineers, fishery students rather than sending out mechanics and nurses,” he said.

Mr Ha’amori blamed lack of long term development plans as the main hindrance to this mismatch.

“Currently SICHE is working on policy of government which is sometimes not good if there is a change of Government,” he said.

The DPP launched its platform on Sunday in Honiara.

Its main goal is to address economic problems in the rural areas.
