THREE students of Batuna Vocational Centre in Western Province were seriously injured when their school boat collided with another boat in the Marovo lagoon on Sunday night.

The incident occurred between Batuna and Gasini port after 10pm.

A staff of Batuna Vocational Centre, which is run by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, said the accident happened while they transported students to board the MV Bikoi back to their villages for the mid-year holiday.

The other boat was also owned by the SDA mission.

The spokesman said mission boat was on its way back to Batuna after it unloaded students at Gasini wharf while the school boat was heading to Gaisini with another load of students.

“The boats collided in the lagoon due to the darkness,” he said.

The spokesman said three of the students were seriously injured, one with a broken collarbone, while the rest received minor injuries.

He said the one with the broken collarbone is like to be sent over to Honiara for medical treatment.
The spokesman said up to 20 students were in the boat when the accident occurred.

He added the two boats were badly damaged.

“This is not the first time this sort of accident to happen here.

“A similar accident happened at the same spot last year at night.

“The lagoon is now teeming with boats that it is no longer safer to travel at night.”
