Deregulating the telecommunication sector is one aspiration of the Solomon Islands Democratic Party SIDP.
And when that happens, improving the telecommunication sector by connecting Solomon Islands with the outside world through an undersea cable is an aim in quest.

Speaking during the third media forum yesterday, spokesperson Mathew Wale said improved connection with the outside world can stimulate growth.

“Deregulation of the telecommunication industry can bring down cost of services to stimulate the economy and currently communication connection with the outside world is via satellite, making it very expensive.

“If we have undersea cable connect us to other countries, then it will give us a much greater bandwidth which means it will carry a lot of communication traffic not only in voice but other data and other forms of communication traffic,” Mr Wale said.

He said this is very important because it will put Solomon Islands on par with Fiji and in terms of investment.

“Because when communication costs come down, there is a greater ability capacity throughout the country for people to communicate, the internal demand in the country for services will be much greater and will lead to other investments to meet the demands.”

He said the importance of communication and related factors it can stimulate makes it an important aspect for SIDP

“Communication is one key aspect to development because it enable other players in the economy to actively play their role otherwise we are almost restraint to small size investments.”
