ACCESS to more and affordable health services and availability of medical supplies, access to clean water and sanitation to all citizens of this country are top priorities by Solomon Islands Democratic Party (SIDP) to improve health services in the country.
This is part of the policy released by the party recently in the lead up to the election.
The party said that a healthy, happy and productive Solomon Islands people can improve the economy and lives of all Solomon Islanders.
The party promised it would promote, protect and maintain the good health and well being and hence improve the quality of life of all people in Solomon Islands.
SIDP said in order to achieve a healthy population, it must address issues like access to affordable health care, access to clean water and sanitation, access to immunization for our children, access to healthy food, reduced access to junk food, health education to start at the primary school level, and well-resourced well-trained health professionals.
“Integrated community development which addresses the economic determinants of health and healthy village setting is to be encouraged, piloted and evaluated,” the party said.
It added that elimination of vector-borne diseases such as malaria; and researching others such as dengue will help address these on an evidence based approach.
“Population growth control is a cross-cutting issue and needs to be mainstreamed, and priority must be given to the education of all girls to senior high school and tertiary levels.
“Our health indicators are generally slow to improve,” the policy document said.
Further, emerging lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, obesity, neoplastic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, road traffic related injuries, etc are on the rise.
“Newer communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, influenza outbreaks also pose a threat to us.
“We are committed to meeting the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
“And to remain committed in our pursuit of these goals beyond that time.
“Our pandemic response capability needs to be strengthened.
“Our borders need robust quarantine enforcement.
“Budgetary resources are to be made available to deal with disaster responses, including pandemic responses,” the party said.
