There are 24 Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers currently working in Solomon Islands.
Most volunteers enjoy staying in Solomon Islands which forced some of them to re-apply for new contracts to come back to Solomon Islands.

Yukiko Kasuya is one of them.

She was a Home Economics teacher at F.M.Campbell C.H.S in Makira.

Now she is working at Kastom Gaden Association (KGA) to help PSO women and nutritional health.

She decided to return to Solomon Islands because of the food and people.

“When I stayed in Makira, I got many friends and I really love people who I met in Solomon Islands,” Ms Kasuya said.

“They always helped me and they became happy when I ate Solomon Kakai and I teach some life-skills like cooking, sewing, knitting and so on,” she said.

She said early this year the contract to re-apply became available and she re-applied.

“If I am to make women happy through introducing my skills, I’d like to work together again.

“Then I applied to come back to Solomon Islands,” she said.

How is Solomon Islands for you?

Ms Kasuya said Solomon Islanders are very nice people who are very kind and the children’s smile are very cute.

“They give me a big energy.

“And it has a lot of beautiful natures,” she said.

However, some of the things which made her disappointed is with the attitude of people when it comes to maintaining their surrounding and being drunk and disorder.

“I’m sorry when I see some throwing away rubbish, stealing and drinking in the public,” she said.

Since arriving back in the country few weeks ago she started working with the local staff at Kastom Gaden Association (KGA), at Burns Creek, east Honiara.

She had already enjoyed her time working with the local staff and sharing her skills with local women on nutritional food.
