A TRAINING workshop for PFNet Rural Community Email operators was held in Gizo last week.
Five rural community email operators from Western and Choiseul provinces and a SIBC Hapi Lagon News presenter attended the basic journalism training.

The five rural community email operators came from Simbo, Rarumana; Jones Adventist College; Pagoe (Choiseul), Vanga Rural Training Centre and SIBC Radio Hapi Lagon in Gizo.

The Solomon Islands Media Assistance Scheme (SOLMAS) facilitated this training.

Similar training will also be provided to other rural community email stations operators throughout the country.

“The goal of the training is to empower operators in capturing and reporting community activities, “says Tony Matelaomao, Communications and Rural Development Officer of People First Network.

Mr Matelaomao further said that often times, rural communities are provided with urban news which is not relevant to community consumers.

The training of rural community email operators will allow them to contribute to the main stream media, thereby extending the reach of media to more people in the communities.

Nickson Sione from Simbo speaks highly of the training.

He said that it is important that he has skills in journalism.

This, he said, will help him in reporting events that are happening in his community that have impacts on the lives of the people.

Madonna Kerezai from Choiseul province also believes tjat the training will help her to share many events in and around her community of Pagoe.

David Barrow, Training Specialist of SOLMAS is the key facilitator to the training and is assisted in facilitation by Tony Matelaomao.
