TRC hearings battles with noise

WHILE victims appearing before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Honiara, Malaita and Guadalcanal relayed their stories under much quite atmosphere, in Gizo it was different.

The Western and Choiseul Regional hearing was hampered by noise from the nearby construction of the new multi-million dollar Gizo hospital.

The United Church which hosts the proceeding is located opposite the new construction site.

However, it is a situation where organizers and Commissioners could do nothing about it.

One of the TRC rep in Western province earlier told the Solomon Star the United Church is the only option left for them.

The rep said organizers initially planned to stage the hearing inside the new Netball Court inside the JF Kennedy stadium.

However, it was not possible because the construction for the new stadium under FIFA Goal project is currently in progress.

As such, the rep said United Church is the last option left as there are no other suitable venues to host the hearing.

TRC Chairman, Fr Sam Ata on Tuesday warned observers that silence is one of the main ground rules of the hearing.

He said this is in respect of the victims who will tell their stories of what happened to them during the tension.

While the warning was taken on board by observers, no one could stand the heavy noise coming from the hospital’s construction.

The TRC hearing is mandated by the Government under an Act of Parliament to allow victims and perpetrators to tell their stories of the recent ethnic tension on Guadalcanal from 1998-2000.
