LIKE other most overseas community which celebrated the country’s 32nd independence anniversary last week, the Pacific Adventist University (PAU) did celebrate a low profile celebrations at the campus last week.

Obed Zutu Vice President Solomon Islands Community Pacific Adventist University told Solomon Star that the 32nd Solomon Islands Independence celebration for the local community at PAU near Port Moresby was a low key.

“In the past, various Solomon Islands communities in Port Moresby usually had a combine independence celebration.

“Last year was hosted by SISA PAU,” he said.

Mr Zutu said that financial reasons had been the factor to force the organisers to cancel the celebrations in the last minute.

“This year independence celebration supposed to be hosted by UPNG Waigani campus but due to lack of finance and proper planning and preparation, it was cancelled,” he said.

Instead, various Solomon Islands communities around PNG had their own celebration.

For the Solomon Islands community at PAU the celebration the 32nd kicked off with a brief official flag raising ceremony at 6.00 am PNG local time.

It was then followed by a Independence bung dinner at 5 pm.

Representatives from PAU administration and student leaders from PNG and other cultural groups (Pacific Island countries) within PAU were also invited to the bung.

“We hope that next year, we will get back to the combine independence celebration, the Vice president said.
