When all beds are taken up, authorities have to take steps to discharge some patients early to allow for new and serious ones to come in.
But if there are no beds, patients have been sent back home while on treatment.
These are some of the experiences that the country’s main hospital has been facing and still is.
Shortage of bed is a problem and there is a great need for more beds to cater for increasing number of admission at the hospital.
Yesterday, for the second time this year, the Adventist health department of the Seventh Day Adventist church, with the assistance from Adventist Relief Development Agency (ADRA), donated 14 beds and 16 mattresses to the hospital.
Director of Health Dr Silent Tovosia said the donation is part of an ongoing assistance towards the hospital.
He said the donation is part of the church’s activity to help the national hospital and its medical services.
He said Atoifi and other 20 clinics have also benefitted from similar assistance.
Dr Tovosia believes the equipment will help to ease the bed shortage in the hospital.
Dr James Auto, head of the Pediatric ward, said the hospital needs new beds and mattresses.
And he thanked the Adventist health department and ADRA for seeing the need to assist in the area.
Dr Auto said the hospital belongs to everyone and the donation is very important and got to show how organisations have recognised the importance of medical services and their need in this country.
“The beneficiaries of these equipment will be patients who will be using the beds and mattresses.
“And so behalf of the hospital management and staff, we are thankful for this generous donation will relieve the bed shortage at the hospital,” he said.
Assistant nursing in charge Mary Wakio said the beds will be distributed accordingly to the medical ward, post-natal and children’s ward.
Henry Kana from ADRA said they are pleased to partner with the hospital for such donation.
ADRA had been donating bed and wheel chairs to the hospital this year and promised to continue support the national hospital in any future projects.
Staff of the hospital and ADRA witnessed the brief handing over ceremony at the corridor near the dental clinic.
