The three adult men left Reef Islands early on Tuesday for Santa Cruz and experienced a mechanical problem with their engine.
At approximately 10am, Temotu Telecommunication office received an urgent message via mobile phone from one of their staff who was travelling in the boat and requesting assistance.
Lata Police have been searching for the boat but are so far yet to sight it.
Civilian boats joined in the search, but are yet to find anything more than a water container that is believe to be from the lost boat.
Information received by police on Wednesday afternoon suggested that the boat had drifted towards Tenakula Island, in the Vanuatu region.
Communities along the Reef Islands are urged to be on the look out for the missing people who are believed to be drifting on a 20-feet red boat named the ‘Sana’ and powered by a 30HP Suzuki engine.
Anyone who may have any information in relation to the missing boat and people can contact Lata Police through 53023, or Honiara Police Maritime base on phone 22563 or 23666.
The incident serves as a reminder for anyone travelling across water to make sure they travel in fine weather and have adequate supplies of fuel, water and food.
Safety equipment such as life jackets, compass, flares and marine radios are also essential.
