AS the country gears up for the national general election on August 4, police and military presence along the streets of Honiara are now visible.

Since last week military personnel from RAMSI are seen patrolling the streets.

This is to ensure a trouble-free election.

A repeat of the 2006 April riot is what Police Commissioner Peter Marshall said he did not want to see during this year’s elections.

The increasing presence of police and military on the streets shows Mr Marshall is serious.

Their visible presence is to boost confidence amongst residents and businesses in the city.

Deployments were done in different areas of town and outside of Honiara.

Since the start of campaigning, police presences have also been seen at various campaign locations around Honiara.

Mr Marshall said that security is one of the key priorities in this year’s national general election.

Four years ago, during the election of the Prime Minister, Honiara residents ran riot resulting in widespread devastation in Chinatown and parts of Point Cruz.
