WORK is underway at caretaker Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua's "famous road" at North East Guadalcanal.

Some losing candidates including Our Party's President Manasseh Sogavare have used the bad state of the road to bring down Dr Sikua in the recent election.

However, Dr Sikua returned with a clear majority after he campaigned very hard to win the support of his people.

Dr Sikua told the media at his official residence yesterday all four contractors have already left for the road in his constituency.

"A contractor had already left for the main road at Berande and Bokokimbo and started work two weeks ago.

"The road leading up to Komukama, Magia and Inuse, contractor has already started work last week," he said.

Dr Sikua said road going up to Tenakoga, contractor had already left and work will start this week.

"And road going down to my place at Tasimboko, contractor had already identified and once mobilised, it should start this week," he said.

Dr Sikua said in the next two months, every road should improve to a good state.

He said a lot of money has been spent by himself to open up the roads in 2006 and 2007.

"I spent money of the constituency on the roads after it was disused for 12 years following the ethnic tension. I left with no money and had to rely on the government.

"And so in the last one and half years, I have been trying my best for government to fix the roads but in 2008 and 2009, we hit the global financial crisis.

"So couple of time we release tenders, Ministry of Finance said there is no money, so we have to hold back again," he said.

Dr Sikua said until recently when Solomon Islands is coming out from the crisis, they are starting to fix the roads.

"But I want to thank my people for their patience regardless of any complaints and criticisms. My people understand Government process and it shows in my re-election," he said.
