MPs told to avoid: Conflict of interest

Mr Dettke
THE Leadership Code Commission says it's wrong under law for government leaders to put themselves in positions that will give rise to conflict of interests.

This came after the new Government appointed Bodo Dettke to the Ministry of Forestry.

Mr Dettke’s Success Company Ltd has heavily involved in the logging industry for many years.

Chairman of Leadership Code Commission, Emmanuel Kouhota, said leaders must avoid putting themselves in situations that give rise to conflict of interest.

"Conflict of interest rule doesn't have to be actual. As soon as the public perceived that it's conflict of interest, under law it's wrong," he said.

Mr Kouhota said under provisions in the Leadership Code Act, leaders must first put aside their business interest before holding such positions.

He said if they don't comply, then the Commission will ask them to do so in order to avoid breaching the Act.

Breaching of the leadership Code Act is liable to misconduct in office.

The Leadership Code Commission is a constitutional office that is free from government influence.

Mr Dettke had earlier told the Solomon Star any public perception on his new ministerial portfolio that there will be conflict of interest should be taken in a context that his business interest will not stop his decision to serve the nation.

“Some people say there’s conflict of interest but I think common sense will prevail.

“It is what I know better because you wouldn’t put a doctor in the Ministry of Forestry, somebody who doesn’t understand the industry,” he said.

He said “a lot of people do have different views on my appointment but I respect their views.”

Mr Dettke came into Parliament for the first time after unseating former MP Siriako Usa in the August 4 election.

He was sworn in last Friday.
