INTERNATIONAL Literacy Day will be celebrated around the world on 8 September 2010.

In Solomon Islands similar celebrations have been planned for next week on Wednesday.

It is coordinated by UNESCO, a branch of the United Nations.

UNESCO has played the lead role globally in promoting literacy and its impact on life.

A statement from the Literacy Association said the purpose of the International Literacy Day is to remind people that there are millions of adults around the world who cannot read and write, but that we can do something about it.

Literacy gives people valuable skills to improve their own lives and empowers them to contribute to the social, religious and political affairs of their communities and their nation.

Lee Montgomery, Literacy Specialist in Solomon Islands, said in Honiara the celebrations will be held at Marantha Hall next week.

“We are celebrating International Literacy Day in the Solomon Islands to remind us that there are many adults here who cannot read and write but that we, too, can change that.

“We can make a difference in the lives of people in every province through community literacy classes and through advocacy,” Mr Montgomery said.

The Literacy Network Solomon Islands has prepared a program that will give a glimpse of the impact of literacy on lives here in the  Solomons.

Several adults will share their personal stories of how learning to read and write has changed their lives.

Literacy classes will present items demonstrating their reading skills.

“The Public is cordially invited to the International Literacy Day Celebration at Maranatha Hall, Burns Creek on 8 September 2010,” the statement said.

The program begins at 10am.

“Come hear how literacy has made a difference in the lives of adult literacy students in Honiara and in the provinces.

“And also how you can be a part of helping others learn to read and write,” the statement said.

Literacy agencies and literacy classes will have booths set up so that people can find out about classes they can join or how they can learn to teach others to read.
