THE European Union (EU) yesterday donated a refurbished truck with a winch on its back to the staff of Solo Enviro Beautification.

EU’s Charge d’Affairs Doctor Abul Aziz Myabe handed over the truck to chairperson Kethie Saunders and her staff.

Mrs Saunders thanked the EU for its support.

She said the truck is just one of the many donations EU had given them.

“This donation now made this project very secure and help develop us to stand on our own feet,” she said.

She said the truck will boost their work to move the pots in the middle of the roads which sometimes can be a challenge for them especially when some of them are broken.

“We will continue to try and develop and sustain the work we do,” she said.

Ms Saunders said the challenge for the SEB staff is trying to get the public to respect their work.

“We have trees cut down, plants pulled out from plant boxes, and it’s very challenging as we don’t have a lot of money to keep replanting trees, it’s very disheartening and upsetting for our staff when people keep doing this.”

She applealed to the public to respect the work they do because they are just a small organisation and if donors don’t help them their job would have been more difficult.

“What we are doing now is setting a good example for your children, therefore everyone who liaises with SEB should all work together for the same purpose to achieve a lot more,” she said.

Tiffany Tuhaika, who manages the SEB committee, also thanked EU for continuing to support them since their establishment.

EU Charge d’Affairs Dr Abdul Aziz Myabe said EU is very happy to contribute to anything that can bring development to Solomon Islands.

He said development starts when we have a beautiful environment and beautiful place.

He said funds used to buy the truck came under the Non-state Actor’s Grant, financed directly from Brussels and managed by his office here.

“The funding can go up to $1 million Solomon dollars,” he said.

Dr Aziz said they are very pleased to bring in their contribution to the project and will make sure they will continue to work togeher for the future development of this nation.

The refurbished truck costs about SBD$198,000.
