Premier Richard Irosaea revealed this during the 27th Second Appointed Day at Afio, last Thursday.
"Despite the fact that Afio as a station is now going on to 80 years old, this celebration not only marks the 27th anniversary of the Province’s Second Appointed Day, but also a ground breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of Afio township development," he said.
Mr Irosaea assured the community that in due course the province will employ the service of a physical planner to plan and draw up a physical layout of the Afio Township.
"After that surveyors and engineers will come in to survey and block up the town for development.
"Afio will be developed into a well planned and modern town where utility services and road infrastructure must be established before construction is carried out in residential, industrial or commercial zones of the town," he said.
However, Mr Irosaea said the last thing they want to see is Afio to become another Honiara or Auki; unplanned and very difficult to maintain and clean the environment.
"The Province will develop Afio into a tourist town of Malaita Province.
"For the above reasons I ask all local investors who are dying to develop Afio town to bear with the province until the town infrastructure and utilities are in place," he said.
"I also urge the ordinary people of Afio and the surrounding communities to take responsibility for what is happening in Afio Town.
"If any one builds a house or erects a structure in a spot which you feel is a wrong spot for such structure to be alert the authorities to check on the builder’s plan.
"Remember an attractive and clean town attracts people, and when people gather in one location normally you have demands for goods and services," he said.
