New tanks for Babasu villagers

VILLAGERS of Babasu, East Guadalcanal last week took delivery of their new water supply project.

Chief Health Inspector for Guadalcanal province Environmental Health Division, James Ziru and members of the division last Friday travelled to Babasu village to officially open and handover the water supply project.

The project is identified under Guadalcanal Province Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS).

Abot 300 people will now be able to access clean water for drinking, cooking and washing.

This effectively brings to an end days of struggle when villagers used to walk 10 minutes up to hilltop to fetch water at a distant stream.

AUSAID and the national government through Guadalcanal province funded the project at a cost of about $120,000.

The project was implemented by the community and RWSS installed 13 stand-pipes at Babasu that will serve 42 household.

At the commissioning ceremony, Chief Ben Livu spoke highly of the new water supplies that women, children and the community as a whole will now enjoy clean water for drinking, cooking and washing.

Chief Livu said water is the major problem for people of Babasu for years.

The project, which was initiated last month has brought much relief to the community, he said.

Chief Livu hoped the people of Babasu will looked after the new water supply as it will benefit the community in near future.

He thanked the donor, government, the province and those involved in the construction of the new water supply.

Head of Guadalcanal environment health division James Ziru told people of Babasu that water is life.

He said water is important to health and Babasu community is fortunate to have water right at their door steps.

Mr Ziru reminds Babasu community to look after the project as it will benefit the whole community.

Mr Ziru thanked the community for their free contribution in the project.
