The Danny Philip-led coalition in a Government Caucus meeting last Wednesday endorsed the former MP for Temotu/Nende, Patterson Oti as its candidate for the post.
Opposition leader, Steve Abana said his group met yesterday morning and agreed to support the government’s endorsed candidate Mr Oti.
On its part, the Opposition has endorsed the for North East Guadalcanal and former prime minister, Dr Derek Sikua as its candidate for the post of deputy speaker.
Mr Abana said the Opposition welcomes the government’s endorsement of the former MP for Temotu/Nende for the Speaker of National Parliament post based on his profound knowledge of the workings of parliament and parliamentary procedures.
“We were also proud that Dr Sikua also possesses the qualities required for the post of deputy speaker,” he said.
The first meeting of the ninth parliament starts tomorrow and will see the election of a new speaker as well as a deputy speaker.
The former Speaker of Parliament Sir Peter Kenilorea’s term in office has ended at the dissolution of the eighth parliament and is not seeking re-election.
