THE long form preliminary inquiry fixed into the case of a local magistrate facing official corruption charges has been vacated yesterday.

Public Prosecutor Natalie Kesaka made the application to vacate the inquiry date as one of the witnesses will not be available on that date.

The inquiry date for the case of Deputy Chief Magistrate Jefferson Leua has been fixed for September 7 and 8 this year

However, the court was told that the witness, who is in Australia, is not able to travel this week for the inquiry.

Leua was charged with three counts of larceny by servant and five counts of official corruption.

Meanwhile, the prosecution said they will respond to the defence counsel regarding the issue of the duplicated charges.

Leua was not present in court yesterday but his lawyer explained his absence saying that he has to return home to attend a relative’s funeral.

Principal Magistrate Mekeo Gauli vacated the inquiry date and adjourned the matter to September 20.

Bail for the accused was extended.
