This came after the Minister of Home Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Manasseh Maelanga said the city elections will be conducted after the parliament session, which starts.
But former Mbuburu ward member John Seti Iromea said the ministry should not make excuses about finances because town residents need to elect new leaders.
He said the Honiara population needs their representatives to represent them in the council rather than prolonging it.
Mr Iromea said the City Clerk can’t do anything for the Honiara population as he relies on the councillors to carry out his duty.
THE council remains in limbo after it was dissolved last Thursday.
Under the City Act 1999, an election should take place straight after the dissolution of the council.
In such situation, the incoming Minister of Home Affairs should consider two options to keep alive legality of having a council.
- Re-appoint the outgoing councilors for care-taking role until an election is held while similarly minister to declare date of election.
- Appoint a caretaker group (form of an Authority) to run the council until election time.
Mr Maelanga told the media on Monday after looking at funds and voters list, his ministry will set a date.
