A WEEK-LONG basic computer training for Western Province Agriculture Extension Officers kicked off in the Western Provincial capital town in Gizo on Monday.

The course was a first of its kind that was extended to the provinces by Ministry of Agriculture and Lands (MAL) for its officers.

Such courses traditionally are only held in the MAL headquarters.

However, Chief training officer of the MAL, Lily Wane said MAL is happy to bring down the training to its staff at the provincial level.

Mrs Wane said this training is aimed at equipping its officers with the knowledge and skills on using the computer technology at this age when computer is now an important office tool.

Sam Tim, the new Western Chief Field Agriculture Officer, said the training is important and valuable that all agricultural extension officers must now start to catch up with the know how to use the computer technology that is fast revolutionising the world today.

He encourages his officers to take stock of what they will learn this week and apply them when they will soon work with such technology.

At the opening the Western Provincial Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Redfern Alesina was invited to open the one week training.

Mr Alesina highly commended the commended the training and thanked the RDP-MAL funding and IPAM for conducting it.

Alesina thanked RDP-Mal funding and facilitation and IPAM for availing a trainer to conduct the training.

He said it is through the partnership arrangement between MAL and IPAM that made it possible for the training to be conducted.

He also outlined the province’s policy direction, placing agriculture as a priority sector from which the province will alleviate poverty and build its economy.

“In our endeavor to realise this we are committed to working in partnership with all stakeholders to address rural development issues.

“In addressing these issues agriculture extension services must have the capacity to deliver the needed service to the rural people.

“This training therefore will build the capacity of officers to improve that delivery of service,” Mr Alesina said.

He urged participants to make full use of this training so that they will be able to acquire new knowledge and skills that will help them in their workplace.

“Today information and communication technology is a reality in all workplaces in which equipment such as computers, fax, telephone, emails are used in order that we cope with the pace of technology, you must be knowledgeable on how to operate these equipments.

“I hope and believe that this training will prepare you for these challenges,” he said.

Hemaima Moveni from IPAM is conducting the training at the Gizo System computers café.
