PEOPLE of Lalana village in an artificial island in Langalanga lagoon, Malaita province marks a new chapter inside its long history last Thursday when they took delivery of ten concrete water tanks.

The artificial village was left without any chance to collect water at their doorstep for so long and now they are happy that the project was initiated to help delivery water right at their doorsteps.

The project had now enabled hundreds of people in Lalana village to collect water for drinking, cooking and do domestic duties from the ten water tanks that implemented by ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) to 10 zones inside the community.

Lalana water tank project is implemented by ADRA with financial assistance from People to People project from Australian.

Now villagers have easy access to water right at their doorstep and this also encourages them to take good care of the water tanks that is anticipated to last for 25 years.     

“We are very happy that people of Lalana village now able to collect water right at their doorstep that finally fulfill the dream of the dry village”, said Community project coordinator Mary Noli.

Ms Noli said the project ends the long history for women, girls and children of lalana to paddle long distance to mainland to collect water.

“This is a big achievement and a blessing to the community,” she said.

Ms Noli added that those who live in the artificial islands in Langa-Langa lagoon can now have easy access to clean water which is a longtime issue.

Ms Noli said the water tank project is a dream to improve livelihood for women, girls and children of Lalana.

“The struggle of women, girls and children of lalana as persuade her to sought help from ADRA that now they can collect water right at their doorsteps,” she said.

Ms Noli thanked ADRA for their positive response to implement the project at lalana.

She also thanked the community, saying their cooperation with ADRA that sees the success of the project.

Church rep Rinaldo Wale said Lalana water tanks project is a big change to the community.

Mr Wale said they are happy to have easy access to water which is important to the development.

He added there have joint attempts to safe drinking water in the past, but from time to time it was rudely interrupted but now it had emerge from another perspective to water right their doorstep.

Mr Wale reminded the community that the project achievement comes from joint effort with ADRA and that it must be well looked after for all times. 

ADRA Director Solomon Island Barry Chapman said Lalana water tank project is achieved because of team effort.

Mr Chapman informed the community that the funds used to implement the water tank through ADRA management is sent from People to People Project from Australia.

“The money raise is to fund the water tanks for lalana community”.

Mr Chapman said the project marks a milestone for the community.

He added that ADRA is interested to help rural communities to have water right at their doorstep.

Mr Chapman said that about 50 percent of children have safe water for drinking.

ADRA is committed to help people between problem and solution, he said.

Mr Chapman thanked the community for their hard work to achieve their water tank project.
