Taiwan donates to organisations here

THE Taiwanese government yesterday made three donations to the Education Ministry, the National Referral Hospital and Seventh Day Adventist Church.

 Ministry Education and Human Resource Development received 3000 pairs of slippers, the hospital gets DM patient management system while the Adventist church received second-hand clothes.

The brief ceremony was done at the Taiwan Health Centre conference room.

Speaking at the occasion Taiwan ambassador to Solomon Islands George Chan said they have noticed that many children living in rural areas have been infected by parasites, because they walk barefoot and play in swampy areas.

“The infection impacts negatively on the capacity of the body to digest fats and proteins, leading to decreased food intake, weight loss, slow down activities and poor performance,” he said.

“Therefore Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, the sister hospital of National Referral Hospital donates 3000 pairs of slippers to Ministry of Education and human resources, which will distributes the slippers to the needy rural schools to prevent students from being infected by disease and parasite,” Mr Chan said.

Besides, Mr Chan said they also know that, with changing of eating habits of Solomon Islands people with more and more people have faced with diabetes problem.

“Change in food diet is the one of major factors leading to increasing diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, blindness, extremity amputations, neurological disorders, and other chronic conditions.

“This is an urgent medical need for Solomon Islands to address this problem, so we have held two workshops on Prevention of Diabetes in Solomon Islands, which have proven very successful and in addition to that, the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital has developed a new Diabetes mellitus Information Management System to help the National Referral Hospital to fight against this diseases,” he said.

As for the Adventist church, Mr Chan said the clothes will help with ministerial work of providing clothes for the needy ones.

The Dorcas women will benefit from the donation of clothes where they will use it to donate to families who are in need of clothes.

Representative from the three organisations who were present at the occasion thanked the Taiwanese government for the donations.
